Last summer I spent one night at Óbyggðasetrið or the Wilderness Center in East Iceland. As the name suggests, The Wilderness Center is located off the beaten track, close to the eastern highlands. I found the sleeping arrangements I booked pretty cool. Even though they were “slightly” different from what I’m used to booking when on the road, At least I can say it was an experience 🙂 In a way it was like sleeping in a museum.
And that is exactly the goal with this place. To make people feel like they have stepped back in time. Not only the sleeping arrangements are supposed to make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Breakfast is served in a cozy old fashioned kitchen in the house next door.
The Wilderness Center also offers an exhibition on life in or near the highlands back in the day. And you can relax after a long day in a hot tub or a sauna. Which by the way all is designed with an old look and feel. Even though I guess saunas aren’t something you would find in a place like this back in the day. But that is another story 🙂.
The Wilderness Center is for sure the perfect place to visit if you wish to spend some time away from the crowds. Experiencing a peaceful hideaway and get a little sense of how life must have been in a remote place like this in the past.
If you would like more information about The Wilderness Center you can get it here on their website.
When in the East Iceland, don’t miss the amazing Stuðlagil Canyon or the charming village of Seyðisfjörður just to name a few.
