If you love old charming Icelandic timber houses, you will love the new old town in Selfoss.
Selfoss is the biggest town on the south coast with a population around 9.500. Until recently, there wasn’t anything special to see there. Or at least I thought so! 😅 But that changed in 2021.
In 2021 a very special new town center was opened. All the houses are brand new but they look old as they are all reconstructions of older wooden structures in Iceland, houses that no longer exist.
A few of them originate from Selfoss itself, but the rest originate from various places around the country. And there is more yet to come. What has already been built is just the beginning. The plan is to build a cluster of over 30 houses and a few new ones are under construction as we speak.
A pretty cool idea if you ask me. But I’m also a sucker for old houses so it’s no wonder I like this project 😊 Well apparently I’m not the only one who thinks it’s cool as it has become a big attraction in Selfoss. Actually it has become more popular than expected. Which is quite nice with a huge project like this.
So don’t just drive through Selfoss! This area is well worth a stop to have some refreshments an a short leisure stroll. Especially if the weather is nice.
