I know you love hot springs, right? Well if you do, you should put Hrunalaug on your Iceland list.
Hrunalaug is a small and very charming privately owned hot spring or pool that used to be free and open 24/7. However, in recent years more and more people have learned about it. Now it has become so popular that the owners had to start controlling how many go there simply to protect the hot spring and the delicate area around it.
Back in the day the owners used the pool to wash their clothes and bathe themselves. It was also used to bathe sheep to prevent a serious disease caused by a mite that infests them.
Today no one washes clothes or sheep in the pool. Now you only see people floating around and relaxing in this old little pool.
There are no showers on site and the facilities to change clothes are rather primitive at Hrunalaug Hot Spring. The maximum number of guests at each given time is also pretty low as it’s rather small. Therefore you have to be prepared for some waiting time if it’s busy when you get there. As Hrunalaug is in the same area as the Golden Circle it can get pretty crowded, especially in the afternoon during high season (June-August).
Other Extra Stops on the Golden Circle Worth Checking out
Besides Hrunalaug, there are plenty of other places worthy of your attention in the Golden Cirle area. Here are only a few good examples:
- Friðheimar Tomato Farm – a tomato themed restaurant in unique settings
- Brúarfoss Falls – a beautiful waterfall with stunningly blue water
- Fontana Geothermal Bath and Bakery
