Like you might have noticed, I love sharing some places from the area I grew up in. I was born and raised in Sauðárkrókur which is a small town in North West Iceland. The area is called Skagafjörður and is often overlooked by tourists. Which is a shame as it has soooo much to offer. I know I’m biased but it’s still true! 😀
One of the places you’ll find in Skagafjörður and I know you will love, is Grettislaug Hot Spring. It’s located out by the ocean about 18 km/11 mi from my old hometown. The surroundings are beautiful there. You’ll have the ocean on one side of the hot spring and some mighty mountains on the other.
The Name of Grettislaug Originates from an Icelandic Saga
Grettislaug is named after the main character of one of the most famous Icelandic Sagas, Grettis Saga. Grettir who was an outlaw for many years, was said to have swam from a small island out on Skagafjörður Fjord all the way to shore where he bathed in this hot spring. Hence the name.
And by the way, this island is called Drangey and is very fun to visit. But that’s a subject for another blogpost 🙂 You can however see it on one of the pictures here above.
There are some facilities on site, nothing fancy but a place to change clothes and take a shower. Then there is also a camping site and a guesthouse on the premises.
Grettislaug Hot Spring is definitley a place you should check out if in North Iceland.
